Why use positive reinforcement methods…
I wanted to share my thoughts and scientific reasons, as to why I am a ‘positive trainer’, and damn proud of it!
For some people, this is purely an ethical issue. They feel it is unethical to cause pain, fear or force to train a dog. I am one of those people. However, my reason for avoiding aversive, harsh, punishment-based methods goes beyond my moral stance.
So, putting ethics to one side for a moment, there are three main reasons why reward-based, positive methods are our chosen method of training. (There is a nice review of different methods of training here).
They are based on sound scientific evidence of learning theory. The pack-leader myth has been debunked, you can read about this here.
There is no risk of fall-out, unlike with punishment-based methods. If you happen to mark and reward the wrong moment, that's not a big deal. However, if you use aversive methods of training, you face a greater risk of aggression and an increase in stress.
They work! In fact, studies have shown that these methods are more effective than punishment-based methods. See here for more information on this.
So, there really is no need to use methods which cause your dog pain or distress - learning shouldn't hurt!
However, despite all this overwhelming evidence and the British Veterinary Association wholeheartedly supporting positive reinforcement training, there are STILL trainers out there that rely on ‘dominance’ and ‘balance’ training. What’s worse… the industry is unregulated and anyone can call themselves a dog trainer, and dogs and owners are being taught and subjected to unkind and outdated methods without realising they don’t need to put up with it.
So, the important take away is - whoever you choose to work with, ensure they use positive methods and ideally are a member of the ABTC, to ensure that they are accredited and have been assessed to a high standard.
I hope this helps!
